 'After the Wet'

Artwork by Urapunga artist Margaret Duncan

"This painting I did is all about this wet season we just had. It was the biggest wet season. Because I went back after the wet, to Urapunga, and I went to this one billabong and I saw “Golly this water has gone up and so many lily roots here”. Lots of fish, lots of birds. Lots of different kinds of birds. Lots of animals, kangaroo, buffalo, pigs. They were all fresh. Because for maybe 3 or 4 years we hadn’t had that good rain.

I collected lily root too, it had been a long time since I’d had lily root. And I felt so good. It made me think about my mum. She loved doing this kind of thing, collecting lily root and making damper. She used to grind it with a stone and shake it to make flour come out, white one. En she would put it under she ashes in the fire. Oh, it tastes so good!" - Margaret Duncan
